Machado de Assis’ novel is one of the most important works in Brazilian literature. It describes the love story of Bento Santiago and Capitu. As he tries to put together two different periods in his life, Bento, the narrator and protagonist of the story, recounts the story starting from his days of youth, up until the days in which he is writing the book. He involves the reader as a key piece of the relationship between him and his beloved: Did Capitu, the girl with eyes as fierce as crashing waves, cheat on him with his best friend?
